A French study to determine if living near a vineyard increases the risk of pesticides

A new study was launched today (October 19) to find out whether people living near vineyards in France are at greater risk of exposure to pesticides than those who do not.

The PestRiv study will collect data from 3,350 adults aged 18 to 79 and children over three years randomly selected from six regions and is being conducted by Public Health France and the National Health Security Agency of food, environment and work (ANSES).

The regions are: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand Est, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Within these regions, 250 study areas were identified in municipalities located less than 500 meters from vineyards and, for comparison, more than 1,000 meters from other crops or more than 1,000 meters from all. crops, including vineyards.

The method of cultivation of the vine will also be taken into account. The vineyards were selected because they use “perennial crops with relatively high treatment frequencies and are often scattered around homes”, specifies Jean-Luc Volatier, from the risk assessment service of ANSES.

A first cycle of data collection will take place from October 2021 to February 2022, a period of the year during which the use of pesticides in vineyards is low, and a second cycle will take place from March to August 2022, when it increases.

The study will include bioassays on urine and hair samples, and environmental testing on dust in the air in homes, water samples, and fruits and vegetables grown in participants’ gardens.

When the pesticides are identified, the researchers will try to identify the source of exposure in order to find “objectively which sources contribute the most to exposure to pesticides and adapt prevention measures”.

Sources of exposure can include indoor or outdoor air, food, or occupational exposure.

The results of the study are expected in 2024.
