France will soon require car ads to promote cycling

You are probably used to seeing warnings or disclaimers in alcohol and cigarette advertisements. Soon the French government will require all car advertisements to contain similar warnings in an attempt to promote alternative transportation.

As reported by ctvnews.ca, from March 1, new French media regulations will require all automotive advertisements broadcast, printed or displayed in France to positively promote alternative modes of transportation such as cycling, walking, carpooling or public transport.

These automobile advertisements will soon be required to share messages such as “For short journeys, prefer walking or cycling”, “Think about carpooling” and “On a daily basis, take public transport”. The placement and specifics of these messages will depend on the form of media in question.

The new regulations come from the Department of Ecological Transition as part of a broader approach to reducing the country’s carbon emissions. Passenger cars are believed to be responsible for 15% of the country’s greenhouse gas production, while the country has pledged to end the sale of gasoline and diesel cars by 2040. Meanwhile, Paris has already banned driving older cars on weekdays. .

The Minister of Ecological Transition, Barbara Pompili, tweeted of the new regulations, saying: “Decarbonizing transport is not just about switching to an electric motor. It also means using, when possible, public transport or cycling.

While the skeptic in me thinks not many people heed these forced warnings and messages, I am also eager to see if such a move contributes to positive change. Either way, I won’t hold my breath for similar laws in the United States of America, United Kingdom or Australia.
