A newly formed local nonprofit works to preserve an integral part of Cajun culture in Vermilion Parish – the French language and heritage.
Les Amis du Français en Vermillon, created by resident and parent Layla Melancon, promote everything related to Francophone cultures and support immersion learning in the parish.
Vermilion Parish is one of the top three parishes with the highest percentage of Francophones, Melancon found.
âThe French language can be heard regularly in grocery stores, gas stations, schools, churches, restaurants, tourist attractions, community events and many other places,â said Melancon. âThe French heritage and the deeply rooted culture that exist within our communities represent the importance of preserving the French language and culture in Vermilion Parish, and identify a need to promote and preserve the continued success of our program. French immersion.
In partnership with the organization, the Acadian Museum of Erath will reopen its doors on a regular schedule for the first time following the COVID-19 pandemic by organizing a program called La Table Française. The weekly event is a French-language discussion group, hosted by Melancon and Les Amis du Français, where attendees can share the French language, community stories, and more.
The group begins to meet on Friday, June 25 at 10 a.m. at Café Erath, located at 102 E. Edwards St. in Erath. Anyone of any type of French dialect, of any age and of any skill level is invited to register.
Members of the Friends of French in Vermilion will receive updates on activities and events happening throughout the year. The organization will launch its Facebook page in July, but for more information now, you can contact Layla Melancon at firstname.lastname@example.org.
