Nord Stream 2 doubles the capacity of the existing line, allowing Russia to send 110 billion cubic meters of natural gas directly to Germany. The project bypasses Ukraine, whose pipeline network has historically transported most of Russian gas to the rest of Europe.
Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, the Baltic States and Eastern Europe will continue to be exacerbated with the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The Ukrainian World Congress calls for the Germany, the United States and the international community to take all necessary measures to immediately end Russia’s gas pipeline project, which is nearing completion.
Nord Stream 2 will bypass and make redundant a critical gas pipeline between Russia and Western Europe that transits and is the gas supply source for Ukraine and many Eastern European countries. Russia can effortlessly cripple Ukraine, Belarus and other Eastern European countries by literally shutting down gas. They have a history of doing it. In the past, however, reducing gas flows to force Ukraine to make political concessions has also had an impact on Western Europe. This will no longer be the case.
