Elders from Mohonasen and twin siblings Hailey Deguire and Jake Deguire gave their all to the sports they played and the community they live in while in high school.
The two 17-year-olds were multisport athletes in Mohonasen, setting records and participating as members of the school’s student sports council.
Hailey Deguire is the Mohonasen record holder in volleyball with 699 digs, as well as the outdoor track in the 3,200-meter relay and medley sprint teams. This year, she also participated for the first time in high school tennis.
Jake Deguire holds the record for Mohonasen wrestling wins with 156, the most bowling at 110, the most wins in a season with 44, and the most pins in a single season with 32. was created for home competitions for school sports teams unable to compete last fall due to concerns over the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Both were also members of the school’s athletic council established last fall by athletic director Dave Bertram.
âIt’s a community group designed to serve the Mohonasen community and beyond,â said Bertram. âThis year, I invited one athlete from each team to participate and draw on their own experiences to help others. “
Serving on the Mighty Warriors’ athletic council was an extension of the teamwork that the Deguises were a part of with every team.
âWe love all kinds of sports and a lot of our friends are a part of that board,â said Hailey Deguire.
This year, the Deguire’s were also part of the high school’s annual food and clothing drive, as well as its first-ever Toys for Tots charity drive.
âHelping children in difficulty is always a good thing,â said Jake Deguire. âI like helping children, especially when they don’t have the same things everyone else does. They may not be in a good situation and it is about helping them.
Hailey Deguire participated in the Mohonasen reading program over the winter with other members of the student sports council, reading Christmas stories to elementary school children.

The Deguire competed in different sports throughout the school year, but both could be found in gyms across the state during wrestling season; Jake on the wrestling mat and Hailey nearby at the scoring table as one of the team managers.
âI just thought I was going to be there, I might as well help out,â Hailey Deguire said. âI’m here all the time anyway, even since we were younger. I did this every weekend.
After graduation, the Deguire will continue to share a similar address – the Springfield College campus.
Hailey Deguire made the pledge first, while Jake knew his choice was Springfield, but kept it to himself until he shared it with family and friends. The twins’ older brother, Ryan, is also a student at the school.
The parents of the Deguire do not hesitate to have all three in the same place.
âOur parents love it,â said Hailey Deguire. âThey love to go out there. We loved going out there to see our [older] brother.”
During his freshman year at Mohonasen, Bertram appreciated the positive roles Hailey Deguire and Jake Deguire played in school, both on and off the playing surfaces.
âOur perspective is that it’s really important to see top student athletes giving back to the community,â said Bertram. “It’s amazing the amount they are giving back.”
