Haines is the former deputy director of the CIA and a former deputy national security adviser to former President Obama, and has been appointed by Biden to serve as DNI in November. If confirmed, she will be the first woman to lead the intelligence community.

In comments to the media after his appointment last year, Haines vowed to “work on behalf of the American people,” vowing to “speak the truth to power.”

Haines could face an uphill battle with Rubio, who has publicly expressed concerns about Biden’s Cabinet choices.

“Biden’s cabinet picks have gone to Ivy League schools, have strong resumes, attend all the right conferences and wI would be the polite and orderly guardians of America’s decline ”, Rubio tweeted in november. “I support American greatness. And I have no interest in going back to the “normal” that left us dependent on China.

Warner, who will soon take over the chairmanship of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has previously expressed strong support for Haines’ appointment.

“Avril is smart and capable, with experience that will serve her well as director of national intelligence,” Warner said in a statement in November. “While I expect she will face rigorous questions from senators on both sides of the aisle, the sooner we can put in place a confirmed DNI to begin repairing the damage that the four years have caused our intelligence agencies, the better. “

Haines’ hearing will be the first of the Senate nomination hearings for Biden’s choices for his cabinet. Four more hearings are expected to take place early next week, with committees hearing Biden’s picks for the Secretaries of Defense, Homeland Security, State and Treasury on Tuesday.

Biden lobbied for his Cabinet choices to be confirmed quickly after the attack by rioters on the United States Capitol last week in order to respond to the crisis as easily and quickly as possible.

“Considering what our country has been going through for the past four years – the last few days – given the threats and risks in this world, they should be confirmed as close to Jan. 20 as possible,” Biden said during ‘an event in Wilmington, Del., last week. “There should be no vacancies in the State, Defense, Treasury and Homeland Security. We have no time to waste when it comes to the whole team.”
