The Nords, a proud breed of the province of Skyrim, are also known as Sons of Snow. Warm-blooded warriors, they are unmatched in displays of force, and their culture largely surrounds invasion and conquest. With such strong dies to death and heroism, they believe that an honorable death will allow them to move to Sovngarde, the northern afterlife.
Nordics are generally fair skinned and blonde hair with a tall stature and great Viking-like strength. With their history of cold climates, they have an innate ability to withstand cold and frost and have a fierce mindset for overcoming adversity.
History of the North
The Nordics were first known as the Atmorans of the northern continent Atmora. During a great civil war, Ysgramor sailed south of Atmora, landing at Hsarrik Head in Skyrim, where the College of Winterhold is now located. The Snow Elves had already colonized Skyrim and lived in harmony with the Nords until tensions mounted as the popular Norse outdid the natives. The Snow Elves attacked the Nords during the Night of Tears and destroyed the town of Saarthal, the remains of which can still be seen south of Winterhold.
Only Ysgramor and his two sons escaped the massacre and returned to Skyrim with the five hundred companions. Prepared to destroy the population of the Snow Elves, the Snow Prince was killed in the Battle of Moesring by Finna, a 12-year-old girl whose mother was killed in front of her by the Prince. Northern racial bonuses
Compared to other races with a strong magical influence, the main uniqueness of the North comes from brute strength and combat strength. They can cast basic starting spells like flames and healing like other races, but their skill bonuses can be found in the warrior skill tree. Their bonuses are +10 two-handed (25 total starting level), +5 block (20), +5 light armor (20), +5 one-handed (20), +5 forge (20) and +5 speech (20). Although archery falls under the warrior’s skill set, the Nordics do not have a bonus in this regard.
With their history based on cold climates, the Nord race has a special frost resistance ability, which grants them 50% frost resistance, which can be in the form of defense against magic or dragon cries. This ability is excellent against Frost Atronachs, Frost-wielding Wizards, or Frost Dragons. However, this is beneficial when exploring tombs or crypts, as undead Draugr almost exclusively use freezing spells.
Along with their ties to Tiber Septium and the Way of the Voice, the Nordics also have the unique ability to use Battle Cry. Only able to be used once per day, this is a superior power that does not require any Magicka to be used. When used, any target up to level 99 will flee for 30 seconds in an 18 yard area. However, this will not work on Undead, Daedra, or Automatons.
Battle Cry is similar to the Hysteria spell but is equivalent to physical assault, so beware if it is used in populated cities or on passers-by as you will find 40 gold per innocent person affected. Battle Cry should be used to gain a tactical advantage, as there is no damage associated with its use. The best time to use Battle Cry is when you are unexpectedly overwhelmed by a group of nearby enemies, as this will save you time to use healing spells if you run out of potions. Alternatively, if used in a larger area where enemies will flee the maximum distance, it will put space between you and them and allow you to run.
North building suggestions
As Nordics are best played in an offensive warrior style, picking The Warrior Stone early in the game is the best tactic for improving a Nord’s essential skills. It improves all skills associated with combat (except archery) 20% faster. If you prefer a mix of skills and your Nordic uses a bow or has a bit more magical experience, choosing The Lover Stone East of Markarth is an acceptable substitute as it grants 15% more experience in all skills.
The best weapons to choose are two-handed weapons such as swords or war hammers, as this is the biggest racing bonus in the skill tree. The Nordics prefer to wield weapons rather than cast spells; it is also a greater benefit of using close range weapons as they generally do not fight in a ranged battle. There are also some great perks in the two-handed skill tree, such as Devastating Blow dealing 25% more damage for standing strong attacks. If you prefer faster strikes, choosing to use a one-handed blade and shield to knock back enemies is a good substitute for the close combat style. For armor it is better to use any light armor due to the northern movement in combat and its need for lightness.
Increasing stamina is also essential for a powerful North. Stamina measures a character’s physical energy and is used to perform activities such as powerful attacks, hits, or sprints. By increasing the stamina level as the character level up, they can knock back more enemies with shields or deal more damage with weapons. As the Nordics prefer Light Armor, unlocking Wind Walker in the Light Armor skill tree will increase stamina regeneration by 50%.
