The brewery debuts in the former South End Gaslight space on May 6

When Gaslight closed at the end of November after its lease expired, fans of the bustling French restaurant mourned the end of its 15 years of operation. On May 6, a new concept will take its place – and it bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor.

Brewery will open in the former Gaslight location at 560 Harrison Ave., bringing French classics back to this South End location. The concept leader is owner Jeff Gates, formerly of the Aquitaine group, which manages Aquitaine and the Metropolis Cafe. Previously, the Aquitaine group’s portfolio included Gaslight and Cinquecento, the latter of which was shut down following a water pipe rupture that caused approximately $ 1 million in damage to the restaurant.

“My partners and I had several restaurants in the South End together, then COVID-19 and the broken water line on Harrison Avenue made us take a look at the way we did things and rearrange the way. where we ran our business and how our business was partitioned, ”Gates told “We decided it would be best if they focused on the three concepts they had together – Aquitaine to Boston, Aquitaine from Chestnut Hill, and Cafe Metropolis – and I would pick up on the concepts here in the South End on Harrison Avenue: the old Cinquecento space and the old Gaslight space.

Gates then formed the SoWa Dining Group, which in addition to the Brewery will include an opening in late summer and early fall. Roma 500 in the former Cinquecento space, as well as Pho on Thayer, which will open next year.

The interior of the Brewery has remained largely unchanged from its Gaslight days, aside from cosmetic touch-ups such as redesigning the floor and upgrading some furniture. The dining room will offer 140 seats, plus high tables in the bar area and a 60-seat patio.

In the kitchen, chef Scott Hebert (Troquet in the south) has concocted a menu of centuries-old French dishes: steak tartare, coq au vin, duck with orange and ratatouille. Diners will also find a great selection of seafood, including tuna crudo with yellow fish, grilled Spanish octopus, Faroe Islands salmon, half a lobster tail and a Maine lobster croissant dressed in celery, d tarragon and chives. Here for the “Plate of the day?” Stop by Wednesday for the sole de Douvres in Grenoble or on Saturday for the Burgundy coast.

The wine list will focus on biodynamic and organic options, while cocktails include drinks like The Green Wave and Lane in the Poppy Fields made with mezcal, a vodka drink infused with watermelon and Thai chili. Non-alcoholic cocktails and beer will also be available.

To begin with, the Brasserie will be open for dinner Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Gates has indicated that a weekend brunch service will follow in the coming weeks. Lunch is also in preparation.

“I am delighted to be returning to my neighbors, to see all my regulars and to be this neighborhood gathering space that we have always been,” he said. “A lot of my regular guests are my family, so I miss my family. I can’t wait to be a part of the reasons people come to Boston. “

After a year of upheaval in the restaurant industry, including the loss of Gaslight and Cinquecento, Gates said he “did well”.

“It’s hard for me to talk about what I’ve lost when there are people who have lost so much more than me,” he said. “I’m grateful for what I have left. I’m grateful that I haven’t lost any of the things that are important to me, I’m grateful to get my life back and I’m grateful to come back to my staff and guests.
